Our skin colour classification for South African skin is 4/5/6.
Laser treatment is not recommended for a number 6 skin. (Pitch-blue-black)
Darker skins tend to be more ‘temperature-sensitive’ – the laser ‘burns’ and the ice is too ‘cold’!
The pins-and-needles sensation or snap-of-a-rubberband feeling as lighter skins experience, doesn’t bother dark skinned clients, where lighter skins does not experience the heat of the coldness of the ice as very uncomfortable.
Darker skins takes longer to ‘recuperate’, cooling needs to be done for up to 15 minutes after the laser treatment,
while light skins settle with a 5-10 second cool gauze.
For dark skinned clients we recommend 1-2 Celestamine tablets and 1-2 Parasetemol tablets before or after treatments.
It relieves the redness and swelling, and a bit of the discomfort during treatment.
A lower setting, at which the client feels comfortable with, is still successful for skin treatments.
Side-effects are the same as for ligther skins: just more intense!
A normal skin gets redness, light swelling or a heat rash.
On darker skins it looks more than an allergic reaction.
Since the wavelenght of the laser is not absorbed by the moisture in the skin, no epidermal wounds can be caused.
Clinical studies show mostly redness and swelling that subsides in 2-3 hours.
Although side-effects occur, the client still has the benefit of improved skin regeneration.
The skin gets immune to the irritation of the laser treatment and the recovery time between sessions reduces.
Multiple laser treatment removes pigmentation and softens old scarring.
Skin care, chronic illness conditions and the use of medication are the main causes for other skin reactions as mentioned above.
Any other reactions is not the result of laser treatment, but can be due to :
Skin products, Chemicals, Lighteners,Over exfoliation, Medication, Sunburn, Smoking, Chronic Diseases
The effect of Mesotherapy combined with laser therapy can not be guaranteed safe on the long term.
Redness and heaves on a healthy skin is ‘normal reactions’ to laser therapy– white or tanned or brown or black.
A laser rash 2-3 days after the treatment is normal for sensitive skins, acne sufferers,
clients with poor skin cleansing routine and those using exfoliators.
All clients who experienced a laser rash during the first session, can laser again,
because they still benefit from the treatment.
Clients using exfoliators like Ro-accutane or Retin-A (for acne / wrinkles) can be treated without abnormal side-effects,
when they are halfway through the course of medicine. (normally 6 months)
