Modern tattoo removal requires the use of Q-switched lasers of which there are three types: the Nd:YAG, Ruby, and Alexandrite lasers. The wide range of colours that are present in today's tattoos often require the use of all three available types of Q-switched lasers to effect their removal, and removal may still be incomplete despite using all available Q-switched lasers. In addition to variations in colour, tattoos may become resistant to certain wavelengths of light in a manner similar to bacteria becoming resistant to antibiotics. Thus, multiple wavelengths of light may be required to remove even the simplest of colours. The laser should be chosen according to the colour of the tattoo pigment and the patient's skin type. Generally Q-switched 1064nm Nd:YAG laser is safer in darker skin types 5-6. In removal of permanent makeup, it is sometimes wiser to treat with fractional CO2 laser or fractional Er:YAG laser to avoid paradoxical darkening of the light-coloured pink, tan or white-coloured tattoos. The energy of the Q-switch ND-Yag laser is directed into the ink of the tattoo, by breaking down the ink and stimulating skin renewal. These are then recognized by die body as waste.
